Helping Older Adults Stay Strong, Active & Independent

Fall Resilience
A Free Online Balance & Movement Program for Older Adults
Build Strength. Improve Balance. Move With Greater Confidence.
Fall Resilience is a free, three-phase movement program designed especially for older adults who have become less active, lost some strength or confidence, or find everyday movements more challenging than they used to be.
You don't need to be athletic, physically fit, or experienced with exercise to get started. The program begins with basic movements and gradually introduces more challenging activities to help you improve strength, balance, coordination, mobility, and confidence in everyday life.
Created by Ryan Crandall, BS, PTA, a senior fitness coach with nearly 30 years of experience helping older adults, Fall Resilience provides practical exercises you can follow at your own pace in your own home.
The entire program is FREE. No subscriptions, memberships, or purchases required.
Who Is Fall Resilience For?
This program is designed especially for older adults who want to improve their physical abilities but may not know where to start.
It may be a good fit if you:
-
Have become less active over the years.
-
Feel less confident when turning, reaching, stepping, or moving in different directions.
-
Have noticed that getting up from a chair, climbing stairs, or stepping over obstacles has become more difficult.
-
Want to rebuild strength, coordination, and mobility without starting with an intense exercise program.
-
Want to feel more capable and confident moving around your home and community.
You don't have to consider yourself frail or have a history of falling to benefit. The goal is to meet yourself where you are now and work toward improving the physical abilities that support everyday independence.
Fall Resilience isn't an intense workout program for already-fit, highly active older adults. It's a practical starting point for people who want to improve their movement abilities and gradually take on greater challenges.
Why Fall Resilience?
As we get older, our world of movement can sometimes become smaller.
We may stop reaching in certain directions, stepping backward, turning quickly, or challenging our balance because these movements feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable. We might begin avoiding activities that once felt easy.
Over time, doing less can contribute to reduced strength, coordination, mobility, and confidence.
The good news is that our bodies and nervous systems retain the ability to learn and adapt. With consistent practice and appropriately challenging movement, we can work toward improving our physical abilities and becoming more comfortable with the movements everyday life requires.
Fall resilience isn't about eliminating every possibility of falling. It's about developing the strength, coordination, balance, and adaptability that may help reduce fall risk and improve our ability to respond to everyday movement challenges.
The goal isn't perfection. It's becoming more capable and confident in how you move.
A Progressive Three-Phase Program
The program is organized into three phases, each introducing different movement challenges. You can work through them at your own pace, choosing exercises that match your current abilities.
Phase 1: Building the Foundation
Start with fundamental movements that introduce mobility, weight shifting, basic strength, and coordination.
This phase emphasizes controlled movements and helps you become more comfortable shifting your weight, moving in different directions, and developing foundational balance skills.
Primary goals: Improve basic mobility, weight shifting, foundational strength, coordination, and confidence with movement.
Phase 2: Expanding Your Movement Abilities
Build on the foundation with more challenging movements involving stepping, reaching, turning, and coordinating different parts of your body.
These exercises introduce greater movement variety and encourage your body to adapt to changing positions and everyday physical demands.
Primary goals: Challenge dynamic balance, improve coordination and lower-body control, and develop greater adaptability during movement.
Phase 3: Developing Greater Fall Resilience
Explore more demanding movement challenges that combine strength, balance, mobility, and coordination.
Exercises may include more complex movement patterns designed to challenge your control, reactions, and ability to adjust when movement becomes less predictable.
Primary goals: Challenge balance, improve movement adaptability, and build confidence with more demanding everyday activities.
Not everyone needs to progress through all three phases. Choose exercises appropriate for your current abilities, and progress at your own pace.

A little open space to move safely
Use support whenever needed, and don't feel pressured to perform an exercise that is beyond your current abilities.
Important Safety Information
Although Fall Resilience is designed for older adults, not every exercise is appropriate for every individual.
Exercise involves inherent risks, including falls and injuries. Use a stable support when appropriate, avoid movements beyond your current abilities, and stop if you experience pain, dizziness, chest discomfort, or other unusual symptoms.
If you have significant balance limitations, have fallen recently, have a medical condition that may affect exercise safety, or are unsure whether the exercises are appropriate for you, consult a qualified healthcare professional before participating.
Fall Resilience is a self-directed educational fitness program. It does not provide individualized medical evaluation, physical therapy, or rehabilitation, and it is not a substitute for professional care when that care is needed.
