What is balance?
Balance Can Be Improved—At Any Age
Balance is the ability to control your body in space—no matter what’s happening around you. It relies on a combination of your visual system (eyes), vestibular system (inner ear), and proprioceptive system (your body’s ability to sense where it is in space). As we age, many of us begin to lose mobility, strength, power, and coordination, which can make it harder to maintain balance—especially in complex or unpredictable environments. This can increase the risk of falls, which are often preventable.

Fall Prevention Starts with Awareness and Action
Many common fall risks can be addressed by identifying and modifying hazards in your environment, such as:
-
Slippery floors
-
Loose rugs or carpets
-
Cluttered pathways
-
Uneven surfaces or thresholds
-
Poor lighting

You Can Train for Better Balance
With targeted training that includes:
-
Strength and power development
-
Mobility and flexibility work
-
Coordination and reaction time drills
-
Balance challenges in safe, progressive ways
…you can reduce your risk of falling, move more confidently, and get back to doing what you enjoy—whether that's gardening, hiking, traveling, or just keeping up with your grand-kids.

And Here's the Best Part: You Can Improve Your Balance at ANY Age
Don't let anyone tell you you're too old to improve. Your brain and body are capable of adapting—even well into your 80s and 90s. With the right guidance and consistent effort, you can get stronger, steadier, and more confident.

Are you ready to improve your balance and regain your confidence?

Facts About Falls according to the CDC
Each year, millions of older people—those 65 and older—fall. In fact, more than one out of four older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falling once doubles your chances of falling again. In New Mexico, over one in four adults (29.6%) age 65 and older, report falling each year.
Falls Are Serious and Costly
-
Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries with 20% causing serious injury including fractures.
-
Over 800,000 people a year are hospitalized because of a fall injury, most often because of a head injury or hip fracture.
-
Each year at least 300,000 older people are hospitalized for hip fractures.
-
~10% of nursing home admissions are related to falls.
-
More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling (usually by falling sideways).
-
Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
-
In 2015, the total medical costs for falls totaled more than $50 billion!
I don’t mention these facts to make you fear more as I don’t believe changing one’s weaknesses and behavior is best done by creating more fear. I do, however, want to empower you that YOU can improve your balance at any age, if you are willing to put in the work and the time!
If you are wanting to work with a Senior Fitness Specialist that has the skills, experience, and tools to help you improve your balance so you can continue to do the things you want to do or improve or at least maintain your independence, then we should talk! I can help you get back to not fearing activity again. Life is an adventure… how can I help you continue yours?

PLEASE NOTE!
This is NOT a Physical Therapy practice!
If you need medical attention, you must first be seen by a medical provider and cleared for exercise by your medical provider. This could also mean your provider recommends Physical Therapy which I do not do. There are many wonderful Physical Therapy clinics in the Albuquerque and East Mountain area from outpatient, to rehabilitation hospitals, skilled nursing, to home health physical therapy! Once you are discharged from Physical Therapy, then we could re-visit sessions with me. Once again, mobile PERSONAL TRAINING visits ONLY! I will not hesitate to refer you out to a Physical Therapy clinic if your needs are beyond personal training. With that said, there are times it is possible to work in tandem with your Physical Therapist and work on deficits that are not addressed.
Finally, please reach out if you are a Physical Therapy clinic as I'm always looking for great clinicians to refer my clients, family, and friends to that are close to their homes. Also, if you are a PT clinic and would like to chat about cross referrals, please reach out. I think we should all help each other out!
