Regaining Independence: The Importance of Getting Up and Down Safely

Updated: Nov 4, 2025

Why Learning to Get Up and Down Matters

As we age, maintaining (or even gaining) independence and mobility becomes more important than ever. One of the most underrated yet crucial skills for older adults is the ability to safely get down to the ground and back up again. This skill can significantly impact your quality of life.

Why This Skill Matters

  • Fall Recovery: If a fall occurs, being able to get up—or at least reposition safely—can prevent complications and reduce the risk of long periods on the floor.

  • Confidence and Independence: Knowing you can get down AND up from the floor builds mental resilience and reduces fear of falling. Fear is a huge barrier to staying active.

  • Functional Strength & Flexibility: Practicing this movement challenges lower extremity and core strength, as well as full-body stability, balance, and joint mobility. Specifically, it requires a fair amount of hip, knee, and ankle strength and mobility. If you don't have the ability now, these areas can be worked on!

  • Everyday Scenarios: From picking up dropped items to playing with grandkids or doing floor-based chores, this movement is highly functional. But you knew that! I can help!

Overcoming Anxiety About Getting on and off the Ground

It’s very common for older adults to feel anxious about getting on or off the ground, especially if it’s been a while. Here's how to approach it gradually and safely:

Step-by-Step Progression

  1. Start with a Raised Surface: Begin by practicing lowering yourself onto a sturdy couch or low bench and standing back up. This reduces the distance and may help mitigate fear.

  2. Use a Stable Support: Practice near a heavy chair, countertop, or wall for support. Use your hands as needed.

  3. Work on Basic Strength: Build strength and power in your legs, core, and upper extremities with exercises like sit-to-stands, wall push-ups, and step-ups. Various types of assisted lunges (don't be afraid of the word lunge!) can also be very beneficial.

  4. Practice Modified Ground Work: Use an Airex balance pad, thick mat, or carpeted area. Start from kneeling and gradually build confidence transitioning from hands and knees to a seated or lying position.

  5. Go Slow & Breathe: Move at your own pace, and don’t rush. Confidence, strength, and mobility are built over time and by working through the steps slowly.
